Dr. Hopkins focuses primarily on exploring emotions in therapy, helping clients to experience, acknowledge, and work with parts of themselves that need more attention. To this end, Dr. Hopkins explores the client’s thoughts and feelings to help them gain a more complete understanding of themselves and meet their goals. Getting in touch with (at times) difficult thoughts and emotions leads to both a newfound wholeness, new possibilities for living in the world, and novel ways of relating to others. Therapeutic modalities utilized by Dr. Hopkins include psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and interpersonal approaches. He also works with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing techniques when merited. In all forms of treatment, however, the clinical relationship will be of paramount importance.

Dr. Hopkins earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the APA-accredited Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA, where he focused on psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and interpersonal styles of therapy. He received his B.A. from Washington College in Chestertown, MD, where he studied philosophy and the social sciences. During college, Dr. Hopkins spent his junior year at Oxford University in the UK. Dr. Hopkins also completed graduate study in philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York, NY, before eventually making a career change to become a psychologist. His continued interest in philosophy led to the completion of a theory-focused dissertation on the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. His internship in clinical psychology was completed at the counseling center at Washington State University. Prior to joining ABH, Dr. Hopkins was trained in the community mental health setting, as well as at other university counseling centers in Washington. Most recently, Dr. Hopkins worked as a psychologist at the University of Puget Sound’s Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services. Dr. Hopkins grew up on the East Coast and lived in New York City for over a decade before moving to Seattle and its beautiful Pacific Northwest surroundings.
